Why is Protection From Silica Essential?

Silica is the name of a group of minerals containing silicon and oxygen in chemical combination having the general formula SiO2.

Overexposure to respirable crystalline silica can lead to a disabling, nonreversible, and sometimes fatal lung disease known as silicosis. In 2002, between 250-300 American workers died from silicosis and over one million will be exposed to crystalline silica.

Silica-related occupational hazard:
  • Sandblasting
  • Jack hammering
  • Masonry work
  • Mining
  • Foundry work
  • General construction
Personal exposure standards
  • OSHA Action - 25 ug/m3
  • PEL - 50 ug/m3
  • NIOSH - 50 ug/m3
  • ACGIH - 25 ug/m3
